More on gopher control
written by Bobbi LaPlante , June 10, 2011
I've observed the herons over in the Berryessa Park drown the gophers in the pond before devouring them!

Fabulous photos!

It's all in the beak ...
written by Maria , June 10, 2011
Hi Thomas, I got a good look at this guy, as well as a dozen photos of this particular meal, and it looked to me like the heron crushed the gopher in its beak pretty thoroughly before he swallowed it. That's a powerful beak!

Great Photos - I don't know how the Herons do it!
written by Thomas Wittman , June 09, 2011
Hi Maria,
I have always told people that the heron has to find a way to kill the gopher prior to eating it. I have seen herons take them high in the air and drop them. But this heron must have dealt a fatal blow immediately as a live gopher inside a heron might try to eat its way out.
Best,
Thomas
